Nuclear power plants in Argentina

Argentina currently has 3 nuclear power plants: Atucha I and II nuclear plants and the Embalse plant.

The activity of the sector was formalized 66 years ago through Decree No. 10,936 of May 31, 1950.

The Atucha I Nuclear Power Plant has been connected to the electricity grid since 1974. It currently provides 362 MW of electrical power. The plant is located in the Argentine town of Lima. It is the first nuclear power plant in Latin America. The nuclear fuel used is a mixture of natural uranium and enriched uranium. The type of reactor used is a PHWR pressurized heavy water reactor.

The Atucha II Nuclear Power Plant contributes 745 MW to the Argentine electricity network. Atucha II is located in the same complex as the Atucha I Nuclear Power Plant.

Construction of Atucha II began in 1982. Between 1994 and 2006 it was paralyzed, until the relaunch of the Argentine Nuclear Plan.

The Embalse Nuclear Power Plant is located on the south coast of the Río Tercero Reservoir, Córdoba province. La Central is located 110 km southwest of the City of Córdoba.

The type of reservoir reactor is CANDU (Canadian Uranium Deuterium) type. This reactor uses natural uranium as fuel. The coolant and moderator is heavy water.
